Dear Amanda: We watched the sunset from this spot. Today we hike 6 miles round trip and over 2000' down into the Canyon. A little out of shape, but we did it. love, Dad
Mom addressed the card and wrote in the date. She also edited the message:
sun
(The parts in parentheses were squeezed between lines with a proofreading insert mark.)
I'm giggling imagining their postcard-writing session: Dad writes messages with slightly-inaccurate stories, Mom does the addresses, dates, fact-checking, and commentary. Also note that while she fixed sunset she didn't fix Dad's tense error. (Judging from context, hike ought to have been hiked.)
I love my parents.
UPDATE: OK, this is even funnier than I thought. I just IM'd Ellen to tell her to read this post, and she got out her postcard to compare. Hers is also written by Dad and dated/addressed by Mom, but Dad wrote sunrise (6:00AM). He must have done hers after mine.
And the best part: Ellen also remarked that it was cute of Dad to write dear and love, which is not his usual style. So I looked back at mine, and Mom totally added in the love. Dad just signed it. He did write the dear, however.

My own postcard
So mine must've been written after Dad's first card to you got edited. It was also addressed and dated by Mom, but I think Dad applied some of her corrections.(dated by Mom)
Dear Ellen: We watched the sunrise (at 6:00 AM) over the rim. Did a very strenuous hike yesterday (1.5 mi) as a warm-up for a 6mi round trip today with a 2000 ft elevation drop into the canyon. We are out of shape, but it was great. love, Dad.
Unfortunately I can't tell if Mom added the "love" or not... it could go either way!

hahaha ... and here's my postcard (also written by Doug)
4-10-06Emma: We got up at 5:00 a.m. to see the sunrise at 6:00 a.m. Did a very strenuous 1.5 or 2.0 mile roundtrip yesterday. Today 6 miles [and that 6 miles is underlined! wow, that's some serious emotion from Doug!] witha a drop then rise of over 2000 ft. It was great! See you soon. love, Dad
Oh classic Doug!! Although I can't believe I got the standard colon instead of a dear! What happened to me being the favorite!?!? At least I got a love. And I don't have any editing from mom, although she did write the address. Oh our parents ... going crazy without me there to keep them sane!!

and my postcard!
Ummm I think I already disposed of my postcard but I am almost positive Mom wrote it!! I know one of the phrases was "today we took a strenuous and then a very strenuous hike" b/c i thought they left out a word after the first strenuous but then they informed me that trails are labeled that way. Easy, moderate, strenuous, very strenuous, etc. So maybe Dad was too tired to write mine or by the time Mom fixed all the others she just did mine herself.August 11 2006, 22:19:37 UTC 5 years ago
